“Pulling the Sun Back - Xa’aa Peshii Nehiino Taame” is a site-specific installation, consisting of the three elements of community structures. This enclosure intertwines the traditional Tongva Kiiy (home), Shyee’evo (healing space), and Yovaar (ceremonial space), presenting expansive pathways for my community, immediate and extended, to begin to experience and heal from the long shadow of 2020. - Mercedes Dorame
We made a commitment to keep our design language organic and imperfect, allowing the form to evolve through abstractions, and the movement of light.
Mercedes Dorame X Archeffect
We drew inspiration from a whale rib cage, which pushed our designs into exploring bend-ability, curves, and a repeatable structural system. Our final design respects the earth and sky by being in fluid conversation with the sun, and utilizing the four directions - North, South, East, West -with the near by oak tree as starting points for the build. We were limited to a one foot depth anchoring on the site, so we introduced a set of boulders to our structure, helping offset loads allowing us to achieve a 10-foot height at its highest interior point.
Through the design process we defined and refined what we found as most essential to visibly tell these stories and transmit a physical experiences for the users. We then proposed one structure, which would be inclusive of all three elements - home, healing, ceremony, while being responsive to its surroundings.
Our design is not meant to be a singular experience but rather a series of overlapping and interconnected moments. Our approach to scale keeps the design in proportion with the surrounding oak and sycamore trees. It provides a multi-functional accessible communal space, with various entry points. We set out to create an installation which provides an opportunity to learn with the body, navigating varying structural heights and framed views of its context. We hold space for abstracted traditions, intentional spaces and the environment to overlap creating physical, visual and memorable moments in conversation with the sun and the site. We hold space for Mercedes Dorame’s work to be explored in a new dimension and scale.
